Walking tour Salona– regular is chosen by people who love history, archaeology, and interesting stories. Salona is considered the Croatian Pompeii.
Initially, in prehistoric times, Salona was an Illyrian settlement.
Then, in the 3rd century BC, it became a Greek trading center and finally, in the 1st century AD, a Roman colony.
Later, Salona developed into an early Christian settlement. Today, the city is home to the best-preserved early Christian cemetery, known as the Manastirine, as well as the early Christian episcopal center.
The Porta Caesarea, a monumental eastern city gate dating from the 1st century AD, is very well preserved. There you’ll find parts of the ancient Water Line, the ruins of the Governor’s Palace, and the so-called Five Bridges.
The amphitheater, formerly part of the city walls, dates back to the 2nd century AD and could accommodate 17,000 spectators who watched the battles in the arena. The end of the walking tour Salona is at the amphitheater.
